Meet Amanda
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Being a therapist is an incredible honor. I often think about the origins of this work, back before there were insurance companies or social service agencies, back when we lived in communities where roles were delegated by the needs of the community and one’s personal aptitudes. I imagine the role of a therapist was naturally ascribed to those who offered guidance and wisdom, those who were trustworthy, consistent, and grounded. I believe those are some of the traits that I possess which serve me best in this profession.

I have been practicing clinical social work since 2013. I have experience working with with adults, children, and adolescents in outpatient, inpatient, and residential settings. I started my own private practice in 2021.
My treatment philosophy
As long as humans have existed, we have known suffering. What to do about suffering has been the life’s work of countless trades – from doctors who seek to alleviate physical suffering, engineers who innovate to provide comfort and security, philosophers who offer new ways of seeing ourselves and the world, or farmers who cultivate food to ensure we have access to food and sustenance. The way that I approach my work with clients is no exception. I want to understand what's causing suffering, and how its limiting a person's ability to live a fulfilling life.

Understanding people within the context of their life and the world is incredibly important. We are undoubtedly impacted by our families, our health, our peers, and the larger environment and institutions that surround us. At best, these impacts provide a sense of self, other, and the world that is full of potential and love. At worst, these impacts can leave us feeling hopeless, fearful, or unworthy.

Often the work I support clients through involves:
-
Naming the people, events, and circumstances that had significant impact on their life,
-
Seeing and understanding those impacts on their bodies, behaviors, and beliefs
-
Unlearning and releasing the aspects of those impacts that are no longer serving them
-
Embodying and integrating new ways of experiencing oneself and the world with adaptive perspective and understanding

To support this healing, my practice draws from the research and work of psychodynamic psychotherapists who help us to understand the structure of the mind, our defenses, and the self. My work also draws heavily from yoga philosophy, understanding the interconnectedness between the mind, the body, and the spirit and respecting each as an invaluable aspect of our human experience that informs and guides us. Polyvagal theory and somatic experiencing provides us with further understanding about how the body is impacted by the events of our lives, and gives us tools to create new ways of being in our bodies and responding to stressors. To further help clients to understand, unlearn, and begin to embody a new way of experiencing their lives, I have integrated Hypnotherapy and IFS parts work into my practice. These modalities help us to get out of our cognitive, linear way of addressing problems, and tap into the subconscious which allows us to work at the very root of the presenting problem.
